What is “The Seadog Slam”?
Borrowing from modern urban culture, The Seadog Slam is an uproarious pirate poetry contest conducted by the members of the pirate ship Adventure. Full of rousing poetry (some humorous, some moving, some bawdy), the Seadog Slam is different every time you see it! Every show has the possibility of the appearance of different poets with different poems and styles. Also, each poet has an ocean full of subjects to write about and each poem can be as different as one sea is from another! One poem may be as hot and lively as the Caribbean and another may be as stormy and cold as the North Atlantic!
When you attend the Seadog Slam, you become an honorary member of the crew! Each contestant will be required to appear before you three different times with three different poems. YOU judge them on their words and their recitations! YOU shout out encouragement or derision! YOU become PART of the Slam when YOU determine the next winner!
The first round is a “sight reading” where each pirate-poet will have to read and recite a piece that they have never seen before! YOU will, by number, choose a random bit of poetry (either a limerick or a haiku) from a selection out of the captain’s log; THEY must then recite it to your satisfaction using the appropriate emotion and tone!
At the culmination of the event, YOU will vote to determine which of the contestants will receive the coveted honor of being the Adventure’s reigning PIRATE LAUREATE! They will then be required to perform a final piece to do YOU honor!
The scene in which the Seadog Slam plays out is intended to be a fo’c’sle, full of ship’s crew, or a tavern, full of . . . ship’s crew! The contest allows for lots of interplay between crew members and the audience and aspiring poets from the crowd have been known to join the cast and “recite or walk the plank!”
The cast of the Seadog Slam changes constantly as well. Sometimes one member acts as the emcee of the contest while the others show off their poetry and recitation skills. Next time, the performers change roles and you’ll see an entirely different show. As of right now, there are five constant members . . .
Rae Jusrae: A more silvery-tongued (and haired) rogue has never strode across a deck! The ship’s carpenter, he specializes in crafting lovely ballads about mermaid’s breasts and nailing things!
Mayhem: A wild and wooly denizen of the gun deck, Master Mayhem is the ship’s master gunner and blasts the crowd with fervid poems of ghosts and more mermaid’s breasts!
Dr. Scott: The ship’s cleric and philosopher and a man who knows the classics! Without a doubt, Dr. Scott is the most learned of the crew and knows by heart some of the great tales of the sea from days of yore!
Blackbead: Quartermaster of the Adventure and the reigning emcee of the Slam, Blackbead will keep you in stitches as the poets keep you in tears!
Captain Jane Jasper: The captain of the ship and the only woman who, so far, has had the courage to take on the Slam! The crew’s tales of a “male vs. female” Slam are legendary!
